Who needs words to tell a story? In Raymond Briggs's charming tale, told with 175 softly hued, artfully composed frames, a little boy makes friends with a snowman. He wakes up on a snowy day, tells his mother he's going outside, then begins a flurry of snowman-building. That night, he can't sleep, so he opens the front door and lo! the snowman has come to life. The amiable yet frosty fellow enjoys his tour of the boy's cozy home; he admires the cat, but is disturbed by the fire. The boy shows him other wonders--the TV and a lamp and running water. Predictably perhaps, he is disturbed by the stove, but likes ice cubes quite a bit. Soon it is the snowman's turn to introduce the boy to his wintry world. They join hands, rise up into the blizzardy air--presumably over Russia and into the Middle East--and then safely back to home sweet home. The boy pops into bed before his parents get up... but when he wakes up the next morning he races outside only to find his new buddy's melted remains, scattered with a few forlorn lumps of coal. Since the book is wordless, you can make up any ending you want... like "Then, in a puff of pink smoke, the snowman recomposed himself and went to live in the boy's garage freezer." Or you could just resign yourself to a peaceful "And that was that." Not a wonderful sequel

I should have read the description more carefully, to learn that this is NOT a Raymond Briggs book but rather "based on characters" created by Briggs in "The Snowman." The story begins with a child moving to a new home and his dog dying (on the second page of text!) It ends with the boy and his new dog kneeling in sorrow in the snow where his snowman had melted. What a bummer of a story! Briggs created his classic picture book without words, leaving to the imagination of the child (or adult) to create the details. In the Snowdog parody, each illustration is explained to the reader, with nothing left to the imagination. Much of the story is repetition of Briggs' original book. Why the death of a pet was a necessary beginning to the book is beyond me. I would not purchase this book again.

Get the physical version

If you are considering this book, may I suggest you get the physical version rather than the Kindle version. I purchased this on a whim based on my browsing various Raymond Briggs items on Amazon and it being the only one available for the Kindle. The book features pictures from the film rather than the book. There is no dialog in the book or movie but this version contains explanatory text for young readers or parents who want to explain what's going on to their children. I have an iPad (first version) and was expecting to have the ability to zoom the illustrations. Unfortunately you are unable to do this and the book only takes up about half the screen (centered like a letterboxed film). You are able to enlarge the text only by double-tapping on it. Also, you can only view the book landscape view, not page view. The item says "book and cd" but there is no music or dialog included.

Ok, well oddly enough it appears there is another Kindle version of this item that costs about a buck more. In looking closely at the description (after purchasing the item and writing the above paragraph) it indicates it is "optimized for larger devices". So, if you are set on purchasing this you might want to try that one.

We're walking in the air, again...

Why yes, I know it's a children's book and show. That doesn't stop me from getting it to enjoy, and to perhaps read to my niece and nephew when wintertime comes. I have a warmth of nostalgia for The Snowman as I remember the short animation from when I was a child. It was so beautiful in it soft pastel textures and the instrumental music. I always felt saddened at that one's end. But in a way it teaches a child that things are temporary in this world even with magical things. Needless to say Mr. Cumberbatch adds a soothing narrative to the story, and the background sound and music gives it that hauntingly beautiful feeling as The Snowman animation had done years back. This one pulls at the heartstrings too, but has an interesting surprise at the end

Beautiful book for your child to experience

I bought this for my two year old grandson who loves books. He asked to be read to several times a day and seeks out his books himself to look at when he's playing. He has favorites that he goes to regularly. I got him this one for Christmas, because I saw a clip of the video and was enchanted. After the book came, I looked it over and wasn't sure 2 year old would like it. But it quickly became one of his favorites. It's a pretty book with the magic feel of a snowy day.

A lovely, contemplative way to start Christmas

'The Snowman' has been required viewing in my house since I saw the first broadcast in England in 1982. Now that I am back in the US (in what turned out to be an anniversary year) I wanted to introduce my American nieces and nephews to it. It wasn't easy to track down as the UK publishers told me it wasn't available in the US due to copyright but Amazon to the rescue. So, now my American family hopefully have a delightful English story of winter magic to add to their annual reading of 'Polar Express'. Maybe one for christmas Eve and one for Christmas night.
Everyone in the family was entranced by the beautiful drawings, probably some of the most evocative I have ever seen. And I foresee a few years of young nieces perfecting the telling of the story. After all, it's a story without words. Absolutely perfect for my 18 month and 4 yr old nieces who are just developing language skills and whose imaginations need developing.

A great classic story for all ages

I remember watching the movie short that aired on tv. I only recently came across the book after getting the movie short on dvd. This is a fun book that all kids will like. There are no words to read on the book. It is all pictures. The art work for the book is great. The story might not have words but that is what I think it is great about it because you are able to follow the story with no problems. My son really likes the book and loves the art work too. So if you have kids then this another great book to share with them.
